After the LDP leadership election, Japan has a new leader. Fumio Kishida defeated his nearest rival for the position, Taro Kono, to take over the job from Yoshihide Suga who had been prime minister for about a year. A graduate from the faculty of law at Waseda University, he was first elected in 1993 to represent Hiroshima’s 1st district. Since that time he has served as Minister for Foreign Affairs and Minister of Defence, before becoming Prime Minister. Everyone is waiting to see how he handles the many challenges Japan is currently facing and we wish him the best of luck.
